Sulzbachers on Belgian TV

Belgium’s TV superstar Tom Waes’ travel show, Reizen Waes, stayed in Flanders for this year’s series. And, of course, a visit to Antwerp would be incomplete without a visit to Sulzbachers brewery.

He also stayed for supper, where we had some interesting conversations with him. The full interview is here.

If you live in or near Antwerp, order your ginger beers directly from the brewery here.

Welcome to Spice & Ginger

Many clients and customers have commented that they are interested in a Ginger Tipple which would be more gingery and spicy, they wanted that mild burning sensation in the throat often associated with ginger.
After 6 months of experimenting we are launching our latest addition to our range of ginger beers, the 7% ABV Spice & Ginger. We took our basic recipe using our signature fresh ginger and added cooked ginger, lots more ginger this time. We boiled up cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg (kruidnagel, kaneel en nootmuskaat). We chose a classic hop, Brewers Gold, with its spicy tones and gentle blackcurrant notes to complete the sensation. Then we left it to referment with organic honey and age for a few months.
The result is a body warming, aromatic and balanced spiced ginger beer which leaves a moderate ginger burn in your throat. And if 7% is not enough, add a shot of rum, gin or jenever!
What I really like about this brew is the way the spices play around on your taste buds, each one detectable as the drink warms up in the glass.

Tipple International

Israel’s 1st Passover IPA

The 1st Passover India Pale Ale – with Ginger

After 5 years of development, Sulzbachers has launched this year in Israel its Tipple Hop, a Belgian Ginger IPA or India Pale Ale. Brewer Jeremy Sulzbacher worked with some of Belgium’s leading brewers and experts to create a gluten-zero and kosher for Passover range of six different beers.

One of the early challenges was to convince the kashrut authorities to recognize hops as kosher for Passover, given their association with the beer industry was not straight forward.

Ginger Beer

Sulzbachers Tipple Hop uses fresh ginger, yeast, specially imported sugars hops and honey to create a balanced and refreshing ‘as-good-as’ a regular beer. Israeli brewer Asher Zimber of Oak & Ash Ltd commented “It really came out well with body and head while being deliciously refreshing.”

The Tipple Hop uses the fruity Cascade hops commonly used in IPAs and the spicy Brewers Gold with its blackcurrant notes to complement the fresh ginger flavors.

In fact, the range of 6 different Ginger Tipples from Sulzbachers are sold in Blegium’s top beer bars, stores and supermarkets. We serve them at Antwerp’s main Modeste beer festival each year.

This year’s shipment to London’s kosher stores was sold out within a week. The brewing in Israel was delayed due to corona issues, but is now available online in boxes of 24.
